In a bid to align his political convictions with his lifestyle New York author Colin Beavan becomes No Impact Man, embracing a year long carbon-free, environmentally friendly existence for his upcoming book. Dragging his reluctant caffeine addicted, shopaholic wife Michelle and wonderfully cute two-year-old daughter Isabella along for the ride, he rids the family apartment of electricity, imported foods, TV and toilet paper. With a sub-plot questioning how far Michelle will sacrifice her dreams for the sake of her husband’s, No Impact Man is an intimate, emotional and often humorous exploration of the Beavan’s radical lifestyle upheaval.
Adding to the family’s stresses is the media-frenzy Colin attracts, soon finding himself a subject of ridicule, spoof and criticism. Journalists and environmentalists condemn his heroic good deed as nothing more than a marketing tool used to enhance book sales and Michelle’s position at Business Week undoubtedly pours more cynical fuel on the fire.
Despite this No Impact Man feels refreshingly real and is a relevant and enlightening portrayal of eco-friendly living, replacing traditional tirades of eco-fact with achievable methods we can all employ in moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
